On the day after Jocelyn Nungaray’s funeral in June, her mother Alexis Nungaray received a voicemail from former President Donald Trump, then the Republican nominee and now president-elect.

Alexis, 28, said the voicemail helped shape her decision to appear at Trump’s campaign events, which thrust her into the national immigration debate and also allowed her to keep 12-year-old Jocelyn’s memory alive. Two Venezuelan nationals, who authorities say entered the United States illegally, have pleaded not guilty to killing her.

“I’m just calling to give my warmest regards to you and your family,” Trump said in the voicemail. “You just do the best you can. It’s a horrible thing. This should have never happened.”
