HISD illegally suspended 1 in 10 homeless students last school year, new data shows
Houston schools suspended 1 in 10 homeless students in 2022-23, Asher Lehrer-Small revealed, violating Texas law that bans suspension of homeless students for most offenses. The count was 30 times higher than originally reported by the district, which revised its report after Lehrer-Small noted discrepancies between Houston and state numbers.
IMPACT
Following the report, the Texas Education Agency told districts it was taking additional steps to track and prevent the banned suspensions. Houston and other districts vowed examinations and have rolled out tightening of practices. Legislators plan to take action when the Legislature convenes next year.

The Reach of Our Work
Community Engagement
While some organizations seek to leverage celebrity, access power or proximity to stakeholders, the Houston Landing seeks to differentiate ourselves from local and regional news via a series of impact and audience-focused events and engagement moments.
We prioritize connecting everyday people, stakeholders and those impacted by problems to the organizations creating solutions. Inspiring empathy, civic pride and a sense of empowerment to solve problems is at the center of our in person event strategy

We know that actual change is driven by the community and that for Houston Landing to be a catalyst to help people live more informed lives, we need to be IN the community. In 2024, we upped our community engagement by partnering with aligned organizations and that would help grow awareness of our journalism and be a better civic partner. We were honored to partner with some of Houston’s top organizations and event spaces like the Urban Harvest Farmer’s Market, the Juneteenth Liberation Market, Harrisburg Art Market, Harris County and POST HTX – and excited to talk directly to the community that we are serving.

Houston Landing believes that sharing and listening to stories, and listening to them, strengthens community bonds and fosters empathy. These shows feature five Houstonians, some neighbors, some notables, telling personal, and often funny or unexpected, stories that celebrate universal values. We will do seven in 2025 and expect to have 200+ attendees at each.
